Donovan Mitchell’s lighthearted interaction with fans just before testing positive for coronavirus may have inadvertently helped prevent the spread of the virus.
In a video before the Jazz-Thunder game, Mitchell can be seen jokingly telling a fan not to touch a basketball as they might have the coronavirus. Little did he know at the time that he would be the one diagnosed with the virus shortly after.

This incident occurred following teammate Rudy Gobert’s positive test, which led to the NBA suspending their season indefinitely.

The Utah Jazz issued a statement on Thursday confirming Mitchell as the only additional player who tested positive for COVID-19 after Oklahoma health officials tested the entire Jazz traveling party.
The statement read, “As a follow-up to yesterday’s positive COVID-19 test, Oklahoma health officials tested all members of the Utah Jazz traveling party, confirming one additional positive outcome for a Jazz player. We are working closely with the CDC, Oklahoma and Utah state officials, and the NBA to monitor their health and determine the best path moving forward.”
