During Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals, three New York Mets players displayed a thumbs down gesture towards their own fans.

Fans of the team have a history of booing players, especially during tough times, and this season has been challenging for the Mets. After a stretch of losing 12 out of 14 games and falling from the top spot in the NL East, the Mets made a comeback with two consecutive wins against the Nationals, including Sunday’s game.

Some players took the opportunity to express their feelings towards the fans. Javier Báez, who hit a home run, was one of the players who gave a thumbs down gesture. He later explained to the media, “It’s discouraging to be booed when I strike out. It doesn’t affect me much, but I want them to know that when we succeed, we’ll reciprocate to show them how it feels.”

He continued, “They need to improve. I value and play for the fans. If they continue to behave that way, it will add more pressure on the team.”
