In 2017, Rory McIlroy faced criticism for playing golf with President Donald Trump soon after his inauguration. Now, the top-ranked golfer has spoken out against Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, accusing the President of attempting to politicize the situation.

During an interview on the McKellar golf podcast, McIlroy expressed his concerns, stating, “We are currently dealing with a very serious situation, and the fact that he is trying to turn it into a political issue and treating it like a campaign rally by boasting about the number of tests conducted worldwide is simply not right.

“This is not how a leader should behave. It requires a level of tact and diplomacy, which I believe he is lacking, especially during these challenging times.”

Following his golf game with Trump in 2017, McIlroy described the President as “charismatic” with the “X factor,” but indicated that he had no desire to play with him again in the future.

McIlroy is set to participate in a charity event on Sunday alongside Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, and Matthew Wolff to raise funds for the American Nurses Foundation and the CDC Foundation. The event will involve a two-team skins challenge held over 18 holes, with all participants adhering to strict social distancing protocols.
