As 2020 brings in a new era in sports around the world, it also marks a time of both opportunity and loss. Sadly, on January 1st, the sports world bid farewell to David Stern, who passed away at the age of 77.

Stern made history as the NBA’s commissioner for three decades, taking on the role in 1984 after nearly two decades of service with the league. During his tenure, which ended in 2014 when Adam Silver succeeded him, the NBA grew into a $5 billion industry.

In a tribute, Silver remarked, “Thanks to David, the NBA has evolved into a globally renowned brand, making him not just one of the best sports commissioners ever but also one of the most influential business leaders of his time.”

Stern underwent emergency brain surgery following a hemorrhage on December 12th and eventually passed away on New Year’s Day, with his family by his side.
