The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are limiting team sizes to four gymnasts, causing fans to wonder about Team USA’s lineup.

In 2015, Bruno Grandi advocated for reducing the number of gymnasts on teams. This shift aimed to create a more elite group for Team USA, focusing on all-around talent rather than specialists in specific events. Grandi’s goal was to raise the level of competition for USA’s gymnasts significantly.

While forming this elite group, some members of the gymnastics council raised concerns that this change might limit opportunities for gymnasts with specific skills. There’s a sense that selection is now solely based on who meets the criteria. However, the Olympics addressed this concern by allocating two additional slots for individual gymnasts per country, one chosen by the country and the other by the gymnastics federation.

The reduction in team members has been a trend since 2010, evident in Team USA’s gymnastics history. The team claimed its first gold in 1996 as “The Magnificent Seven,” followed by victories in 2012 with the “Fierce Five” and in 2016 with “The Final Five.” If Simone Biles competes in the 2020 USA Olympic team, she would be the fourth in this line of triumphs. Her impressive career makes her a valuable asset representing the United States.

Best wishes to all upcoming gymnasts as they approach the Olympics, now with even more prestigious spots up for grabs than ever before!
