Zach Wilson and the New York Jets have been in negotiations for quite some time now, but so far, they haven’t been able to come to an agreement on his contract. Wilson, along with 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, were the only two out of the 259 draft picks who had not signed their contracts. However, as of now, Trey Lance has just signed his contract.

Wilson’s absence at the beginning of Jets training camp is a significant issue, especially considering that he is expected to be the starting quarterback. In his absence, Mike White is anticipated to make the first pass during training camp, highlighting the Jets’ urgent need for an experienced backup quarterback, regardless of when Wilson’s contract gets finalized.

The main point of contention in the negotiations is believed to be the offset language in Wilson’s contract. As the second overall pick, Wilson is in line to receive a fully guaranteed four-year, $35.2 million contract, which also includes a $22.9 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option.

It’s crucial for Wilson to get as much practice as possible to prepare for the upcoming season opener. Jets’ new head coach Robert Saleh would prefer not to have too many practices with James Morgan or Mike White leading the offense in Wilson’s absence.
