Philip Rivers has made the decision to retire from the NFL. Rivers, a highly successful quarterback in recent football history, has had an impressive career spanning 17 seasons.

He is most well-known for his time with the Chargers, which began in 2004 when the team was located in San Diego, and continued until 2019 when they moved to Los Angeles. However, his final season was with the Indianapolis Colts, where they finished second in the AFC South this season, just behind the Tennessee Titans. Rivers played his last game with the Colts in a 27-24 loss to the Buffalo Bills on January 9th.

“I am thankful to the Chargers for 16 seasons,” said Rivers in a statement, “and to the Colts for the 17th season. I am grateful to all my coaches who helped me develop as a player and as a person. I appreciate the support staff and the challenging competition provided by opposing defenses every week… I also enjoyed the friendly banter…

“My appreciation goes out to the fans in San Diego and across the country who both cheered and jeered. A special thank you to my teammates… Lastly, I want to thank my wife and best friend Tiffany, and our children.”

Rivers has revealed his intention to stay involved in the sport as a college football coach in an interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune.
