The upcoming summer is set to be full of excitement as the Tokyo Summer Olympics are scheduled to kick off on July 24, 2020!

Some exciting debut Olympic sports to anticipate include surfing, sport climbing, skateboarding, karate, baseball, and softball. This brings a total of 18 new events to the Olympics, providing opportunities for 474 athletes to compete in these disciplines.

For those unfamiliar with sport climbing, it differs from traditional climbing as it involves climbers being supported by permanent protection rather than temporary equipment. A designated “anchor” individual ensures the safety of climbers. The challenges in store for the competitors in this sport remain a mystery.

Skateboarding, another thrilling addition to this year’s Olympics, will feature two categories: park and street. Park skateboarding will take place in a traditional skate park setting, while street skateboarding will incorporate obstacles commonly found in urban environments, such as handrails.

The karate segment of the competition will encompass sparring and forms. Sparring involves combat between two individuals across three distinct weight classes. Forms, also referred to as kata, emphasize karate fundamentals and techniques, offering spectators an intriguing viewing experience.

The inclusion of several new sports will introduce fresh faces to the Summer Olympics, paving the way for enhanced excitement and diversity in the competitions. Best of luck to all the athletes taking part!
