The upcoming world championships in Are, Sweden, herald the end of a remarkable era with the retirement of skiing legends Lindsey Vonn and Aksel Lund Svindal.Returning to the same place where they clinched their first major championship victories over a decade ago, the event holds sentimental value for both athletes.

Vonn reminisces about her early success with a pair of silver medals at the 2007 worlds in Are, while Svindal recalls his inaugural gold medals in downhill and giant slalom around twelve years ago.

“It’s always been a special place for me. I’ve had many great moments there,” said Vonn, a seven-time World Cup winner in Are. “It feels fitting to end my career at the world championships. I look forward to returning.”

Vonn announced on Friday that knee issues will prompt her retirement following her participation in the super-G and downhill events in Are. “I have a special suit designed as a tribute to Stenmark,” Vonn revealed.

Svindal, aged 36, has also been plagued by knee injuries, leading him to declare his retirement after the world championships. This decision disappoints many Norwegian fans who were hoping to catch a final glimpse of their skiing hero on the competitive stage.

“Have you secured your tickets for the world championships in Are? If not, act fast!” Svindal urged on Instagram. “The legendary Lindsey Vonn will be competing in her final races next week. And once we are both done, expect a fantastic celebration.”
