The Australian Open is set to kick off on 8 February amidst a storm of controversy as 72 players are subjected to mandatory two-week quarantine periods.

The players currently in quarantine were on flights with individuals who tested positive for Covid-19. With some athletes confined to their hotel rooms in Melbourne, they are facing the challenge of starting the tournament without proper practice. Meanwhile, top players are being accommodated in Adelaide before making their way to Melbourne for the event. The sight of men’s world no. 1 Novak Djokovic playing tennis on his balcony has stirred criticism that higher-ranked players are receiving better treatment than lower-ranked counterparts.

The situation escalated when Djokovic voiced concerns to Tennis Australia’s CEO Craig Tiley, proposing reductions in isolation periods and the provision of alternative accommodation in “private houses with tennis courts.” This move prompted Australian player Nick Kyrgios to denounce Djokovic as “a tool” on social media.

Argentinian player Guido Pella has recently voiced support for Djokovic, remarking, “At least he said something,” and expressing surprise at the silence from players like Nadal and Thiem.

In response, Nadal addressed the situation in an interview with ESPN, stating, “Some individuals feel the need to publicize their actions while others prefer a more private approach without seeking attention.” He went on to note, “I find it curious that some who have been vocal about conditions in Adelaide have remained silent on the plight of over 20 players who are unable to practice.”
