Consistency in the quarterback position is typically a key factor in college football’s championship teams. Quarterbacks play a crucial role on the field, and teams often stick with the same player unless faced with injuries. However, Clemson, ranked No. 2, and Notre Dame, ranked No. 3, are currently making moves to switch up their quarterback positions.

These teams are aiming to inject some energy into their gameplay and introduce new strategies for the upcoming CFP semifinal at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic this Saturday. Both the Tigers and Fighting Irish are benching their starting quarterbacks, who have been deemed ineffective this season.

Back in September, the decision to promote backup quarterbacks for Clemson and Notre Dame stirred up some unexpected debate. Kelly Bryant, who boasts a 16-2 record as a starter for Clemson, was replaced by Trevor Lawrence, who was ranked No. 2 in the 2018 ESPN 300. In his first drives, Lawrence made an immediate impact with a 17-yard touchdown followed by a 53-yard pass.

So far, Lawrence has completed about 65 percent of his attempts for 2,606 yards, tallying 24 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Kelly Bryant emphasized the unique qualities each quarterback brings to the field, highlighting the importance of how they impact the team, which led to these significant changes at the quarterback position.
