New York Giants and Washington Redskins pick cornerbacks in NFL supplemental draft

New York Giants and Washington Redskins select their corners in the NFL supplemental draft

The NFL hosted its annual supplemental draft, where two players were chosen, the most since 2010. The New York Giants drafted Sam Beal, a cornerback from Western Michigan in the third round, while the Washington Redskins selected Adonis Alexander, a cornerback from Virginia Tech, in the sixth round.

Three other eligible players, Bright Ugwoegbu, a linebacker from Oregon State; Martayveus Carter, a running back from Grand Valley State; and Brandon Bryant, a strong safety from Mississippi State, went undrafted and are now free agents who can sign with any team. It’s likely that the Jets will sign Bryant, as per a source informed by Tom Pelissero.

The rules of the collective bargaining agreement allow players to enter the supplemental draft if they become eligible after the official NFL draft in the spring. The teams that drafted Alexander and Beal in the supplemental draft must forfeit their corresponding picks in the 2019 NFL draft.

For some history on the supplemental draft, let’s take a look at past players and their impact on their teams:

According to NFL Research, 21 players selected in the supplemental draft have gone on to make a Pro Bowl. Four players who were chosen in the supplemental draft have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: WR Chris Carter (1987, fourth round), DE Reggie White, T Gary Zimmerman, and QB Steve Young (1984, first round pick from CFL and USFL).

The last time multiple players were selected in the supplemental draft was in 2010 with Harvey Unga and Josh Brent, while the last time three or more players were chosen was in 1989.
