The New York Jets have officially announced their decision to move on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers, following speculation that began circulating late last week. Head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey shared a joint statement that outlined the team’s choice, confirming that they met with Rodgers to clarify their plans for the quarterback position for the upcoming 2025 season.

“Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” Glenn and Mougey stated. “It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”

Jets owner Woody Johnson also expressed his appreciation for Rodgers’ contributions during his time with the team. “I personally want to thank Aaron for his time at the New York Jets,” Johnson reflected. “His arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement, and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his Hall of Fame career. From day one, he embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet, embraced our fans, and immersed himself in our city. That is what I will remember most when I look back at his time here. He will always be welcome, and I wish him only the best in whatever he chooses to do next.”

At 41 years of age, Rodgers joined the Jets with aspirations for a successful 2023 NFL season, but his journey was hampered by injury. He managed to participate in only four plays during the season opener against the Buffalo Bills before suffering a torn Achilles. However, he made a comeback in 2024, playing all 17 games for the Jets. Despite his determination, the team concluded the season with a disappointing 5-12 record.

During the 2024 season, Rodgers completed 63% of his passes, amassing 3,897 yards along with 28 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions. The Jets are anticipating his release with a post-June 1 designation, which would enable them to distribute his salary cap hit over a number of years, easing financial pressure.

As he gears up for the next phase of his career, the Pittsburgh Steelers have emerged as the frontrunners to acquire the veteran quarterback. Other potential destinations include the Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Indianapolis Colts. The Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants have also been mentioned as possible suitors based on current betting odds.
