Despite the enthusiasm and anticipation following the Lakers’ selection of Bronny James in the 2024 NBA Draft, the move has not been without its critics.
As the most iconic franchise in basketball history, Los Angeles has faced its share of challenges in recent years. The previous season was marked by injuries, scoring difficulties, and staffing disagreements, culminating in a last-minute scramble to secure the final spot in the Western Conference playoffs.
Nevertheless, the Lakers’ offseason has sparked a buzz in the NBA. They hired rookie head coach JJ Redick and re-signed LeBron James after drafting his son, Bronny, 55th overall in June. This selection made league history by introducing the first father-son teammate duo. While many celebrated this landmark achievement, others voiced skepticism, including former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins.
Cousins Questions Lakers’ Commitment This Season
During a recent appearance on FanDuel’s “Run It Back,” the four-time All-Star expressed that the Lakers’ decision to draft Bronny suggests they may not be ‘serious’ about contending this year.
“I respect everything this represents, what Bron is doing for his legacy,” Cousins commented. “As for the Lakers’ competitiveness, I’m unsure.I interpret it as a sign that they’re not truly serious.”
“Given how their last season ended amid high expectations, I anticipated more proactive moves from them.”
Cousins was once part of a James-led Lakers team—the 2020 championship roster—though he did not play due to an offseason ACL injury.
Bronny Discusses His Slow Start
On the other hand, James, the rookie, has struggled to silence his critics thus far. He has played in three preseason games, averaging 0.7 points, one rebound, one block, and 0.3 assists in 11.9 minutes per game.
Bronny, 20, provided insight into his performance when speaking with reporters on Tuesday.
“For me, it’s about getting comfortable,” he mentioned. “Going out there and getting the reps in. I think that’s the most vital aspect. It helps me build my confidence and feel more settled when I’m on the court. I feel good. The stats could definitely improve. I just need to elevate my confidence.”
