In a couple of noticeable instances over the weekend, players were seen replicating Trump’s actions right after the assassination attempt. Following his double against the New York Yankees on Sunday, Taylor Walls, the shortstop for Tampa Bay Rays, was seen fist-bumping while mouthing the words “fight, fight, fight.”

Moreover, the St. Louis Cardinals team had a coordinated celebration where the entire dugout covered their right ear while simultaneously raising their fist after outfielder Alec Burleson hit a solo home run.

Although their gestures may seem suggestive, Cardinals player Matt Carpenter clarifies that their actions are not politically motivated but rather an “inside joke.”
The Cardinals’ celebratory gestures were questioned following comparisons to images circulating after the attempt on Donald Trump.
