It appears increasingly probable that Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving will be teammates once again in the upcoming season.
Recent reports suggested that the Los Angeles Lakers were willing to offer two future first-round picks in a trade for seven-time All-Star Kyrie Irving. However, new information indicates that the Brooklyn Nets have begun to doubt their talented guard’s reliability.
Nick Friedell, an ESPN basketball insider, shared insights on the current dynamic between Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets ahead of the new season.
Friedell remarked, “He needs to show up, be present with the team every day, and perform at the level everyone knows he is capable of. However, his recent performances have not met expectations. While Kyrie is an immensely skilled player and one of the top guards of this era, there has been a breakdown of trust between him and the team over time.”
Despite these concerns, sources claim that the Nets have informed other teams that they do not intend to trade Kyrie Irving before the start of the 2022-23 NBA season.
Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Irving, often linked to a potential move to the Los Angeles Lakers to reunite with LeBron James, has been engaging in productive discussions with the Nets’ front office during the offseason.
Although Brooklyn seemed poised to make significant changes to their roster earlier in the summer, it now appears that they are committed to having Durant, Irving, and Simmons playing together on the court.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN indicated that Irving is committed to staying with the Nets, with the team now focused on Kevin Durant’s decision following his trade request in late June.
“As of now, it seems the Nets are inclined to retain their current team roster and are awaiting Kevin Durant’s decision,” Windhorst stated. “The negotiations and trade inquiries suggest that the Nets are not actively looking to trade Durant. Their preference is to keep the team intact.”
Brooklyn is coming off a disappointing 2021-22 season where they were eliminated in the first round by the Boston Celtics.
