The governing body of world swimming has effectively prohibited transgender athletes from participating in women’s events as of Sunday.
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the sport’s governing body, has introduced stricter regulations for transgender female athletes, extending the waiting period for a rider transitioning from male to female to 24 months based on testosterone levels, doubling the previous duration of 12 months.
James Pearce, spokesperson for FINA president Husain Al-Musallam, clarified, “This is not about encouraging transitioning by age 12. Scientists suggest that transitioning after the onset of puberty provides an unfair advantage. The intent is not to mandate transitioning by age 11, but to address the advantage gained by transitioning post-puberty, rendering it unfeasible for transgender individuals to compete without an unfair edge.”
While the new rules may have garnered support from some quarters, professional soccer player Megan Rapinoe staunchly advocates for the inclusion of transgender athletes in all sports.
Rapinoe questioned the claims against transgender women, stating, “Show me the evidence that trans women are taking everyone’s scholarships, are dominating every sport, are winning all titles. It’s simply not happening.”
Expressing her full support for transgender inclusion, she emphasized the need for greater understanding on the issue. “People lack knowledge about it. We’re missing critical information,” Rapinoe stated.
Rapinoe underscored that the importance of a high school volleyball team pales in comparison to the value of a transgender athlete’s life, arguing against the disproportionate focus on youth sports.
The contentious discussion on transgender athletes intensified when Lia Thomas, a University of Pennsylvania swimmer, made history as the first transgender NCAA champion in Division I earlier this year. Thomas aims to qualify for the Olympics in 2024, yet the new FINA regulation could hinder her Olympic aspirations and participation in elite competitions like the Paris Games.
Additionally, FINA plans to establish an “open” category for trans athletes in select events.
The stance taken by Megan Rapinoe against the exclusion of transgender athletes from women’s competitions signifies a broader debate within the sporting community.
