In a tough cap situation this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys approached DeMarcus Lawrence, a key defensive player, to reduce his salary.

According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys requested DeMarcus Lawrence to reduce his 2022 earnings of $19 million. However, he promptly turned down the offer.

Watkins also noted that when a high-priced player rejects a salary cut, they are often let go shortly after. This development follows recent reports of the Cowboys planning to release veteran wide receiver Amari Cooper for salary cap relief.

The Cowboys have several free agents they wish to keep and are making efforts to comply with the cap before the onset of free agency.

DeMarcus Lawrence, aged 29, was picked in the second round by the Cowboys in the 2014 NFL Draft from Boise State. He still has two years remaining on his current contract with base salaries of $19 million and $21 million.

If DeMarcus Lawrence is released, it would open up $8 million in cap space while incurring $19 million in dead money.

During the previous season, he participated in only seven games, registering 21 tackles, three sacks, a defensive touchdown, two forced fumbles, and five pass deflections.
