Seattle, now an official part of the NHL, has revealed its nickname – the ‘Seattle Kraken.’ The announcement came after much speculation about whether the team would opt for a conservative or bold name.

For the past 19 months, the team’s name has been a topic of discussion, with names like Sockeyes, Evergreens, and Metropolitans being considered. The Metropolitans name was a nod to Seattle’s historic early 20th-century hockey team. Some fans also suggested the Thunderbirds, the name of the local junior team.

In the end, the team chose the mythical sea creature known as the Kraken, resembling a giant octopus. Seattle CEO Tod Leiweke mentioned, “The Kraken is a name suggested and embraced by the fans.”

The team made the announcement on social media with a tweet on Thursday afternoon: “A legend from the deep awakes. Meet the Seattle Kraken.”

Aside from the name, the Kraken also unveiled their team colors: dark navy blue with a lighter shade of blue, in line with a nautical theme.

Unlike the Las Vegas franchise, the Seattle team did not face any copyright challenges. The Las Vegas Golden Knights had a legal battle with the US Army that took years to resolve.
