The Washington NFL team has officially announced their intention to retire the name ‘Redskins’ and their current logo, following widespread criticism labeling the term as a racial slur.

The team made the decision public in a statement released on Monday through their Twitter account, which still displays their old name and logo. Just ten days prior to this announcement, another statement was issued indicating the start of a comprehensive review of the team’s name.

In the recent statement, it was mentioned, “Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review. Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera are collaborating closely to create a new name and design concept that will elevate the reputation of our esteemed, deeply-rooted franchise and energize our sponsors, fans, and community for the next century.”

Ray Halbritter, leader of the Change the Mascot campaign, expressed satisfaction with this decision. “The NFL and Dan Snyder have ultimately made the correct decision, and Change the Mascot applauds them for it. This is a positive step not only for Native peoples but for the whole nation, as it brings an end to a hurtful period of disrespect toward Native Americans and other people of color.

“Subsequent generations of Native youth will no longer have to endure this offensive and damaging slur every Sunday throughout football season.”
