President Trump faced a chorus of boos and “lock him up” chants from the crowd when he was shown on the screens during game 5 of the World Series.
This type of reception is not unusual for sitting presidents at sporting events, as Nixon, Reagan, and the Bushes have also been booed in similar situations.
The chants of “lock him up” likely stem from the President’s current impeachment inquiry, and the game taking place in Washington, a city known for its Democratic leaning. The chant harked back to similar calls made against Hillary Clinton during Trump’s 2016 campaign rallies.
Trump left the game before it ended, leaving it unclear whether his departure was influenced by the negative reception from the crowd.
Moreover, Trump opted out of throwing the first pitch, a tradition carried out by every president since 1910 except for him. The honors went to José Andrés, a prominent DC chef and vocal critic of the President.
The Houston Astros emerged victorious in the game against the Washington Nationals with a score of 7-1, putting them ahead in the Series with 3 wins to 2.
