The hurricane Michael indeed hit close to home for the New York Yankees. Tampa has remained as a stronghold for the Yankees, where George Steinbrenner, the late owners of the team, built the player development facilities and also had a school developed and named in his honour. Hence, the Yankees on Tuesday said that they donated $100,000 to the hurricane Michael relief. Half of the sum will be directed towards the American Red Cross while the remaining amount will be going to the Salvation Army, said the team.
As per a statement, Yankees Vice Chairperson and General Partner, Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal said that the devastation caused by the hurricane in the Panhandle region of Florida is extensive. But the Floridians are strong and resilient, and the team wants to offer its support and assistance during such a serious time of need, Steinbrenner Swindal added. Moreover, the team also extends its deepest sympathies to the many lives which have suffered the impact caused by the storm, Steinbrenner Swindal further said.
Around 16 people have died in Florida due to the hurricane, with most of them along the panhandle, as per the information by Associated Press. The storm’s fury became even clearer when just after a week, missing person’s reports and desperate searches in the Panhandle neighbourhoods caused by the most strong hurricane to hit the continental United States in around 50 years.
The 16 people who died due to the hurricane is twice the number recorded than the number tallied. The emergency authorities informed that 12 of the deaths occurred in the Bay County, where the hurricane slammed ashore with a speed of 155 mph and towering storm surge previous Wednesday. Bay country includes the Mexico Beach, a town of about 1000 people which was almost obliterated as well as the Lynn Haven, Panama City, and Tyndall Air Force base which were all highly damaged.
