Boston Celtics guard Derrick White discussed the altercation he was caught up in during the Colorado football rivalry game against Colorado State earlier this month.
Derrick White Expresses Regret Over Altercation
At the Celtics Media Day on Tuesday, White provided an update on his health and reflected on what he termed an “unfortunate” incident.
“My teeth are improving,” he shared from the stage. “I had to visit the dentist one Friday and underwent three root canals, which was quite the experience.
He added: “Honestly, the Colorado situation is unfortunate. I never imagined I would find myself in that situation… I didn’t actually get struck; he just knocked my hat off. I shouldn’t have been there.”
A former student of the University of Colorado, White attended the rivalry game on September 14. During the event, he reportedly engaged in a “verbal spat” with some CSU supporters. Footage shared by TMZ shows a fan swinging their arm at the Celtics guard with enough force to send his hat flying. Clearly upset, White appeared ready to escalate the confrontation until several fans and law enforcement intervened.
CSU later acknowledged its awareness of White’s involvement in the viral incident but noted that no official police report was filed concerning the event. Additionally, they stated that no injuries had been reported related to any disturbances in the crowd during the game.
White Committed to Boston
Aside from the scuffle, Derrick White has celebrated some significant achievements this offseason. He secured a gold medal with the US Men’s Basketball team at this year’s Olympics shortly after the Celtics clinched the NBA Championship. To top things off, White and the Boston team reached an agreement on a four-year contract valued at nearly $126 million in July. He elaborated on his choice to remain with the Celtics during the Media Day.
“I’ve consistently said since I’ve joined that I didn’t want to go anywhere else,” White remarked. “I enjoy playing for this organization, being part of this team, working with this coaching staff, and serving these fans. I was thrilled for (the extension) to be finalized, especially early in the Summer, so I wouldn’t have to address all the questions about it. I love being here. My family and I are looking forward to being a part of this for a while.”
