Amid all the excitement over Bronny James, a rising star in the NBA scene, new Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick aims to provide a balanced view.
Redick emphasized, “He is a player in progress,” as reported by Dave McMenamin of ESPN. “We see Bronny in terms of development. He’ll be part of the Lakers team and also get experience in the G League. He’s a crucial component of our player development initiatives.”
James, the son of basketball icon LeBron James, showcased his skills at the Las Vegas Summer League in a recent game against the Atlanta Hawks, scoring 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting. In addition, he made his first 3-pointer of the summer, going 2-of-5 from beyond the arc in the Lakers’ 87-86 victory.
“I’m focusing on moving past missed shots and losses, just playing my game and giving my best effort,” James shared with ESPN’s Katie George post-game, per McMenamin.
Lakers fans can anticipate strong support for James Jr. in G League matchups and significant merchandise sales, especially in this initial phase. However, the ultimate aim is to mold him into a reputable NBA guard.
While James shows promise with his fundamentals and potential, there’s acknowledgment of the necessary groundwork ahead. The Lakers are committed to cultivating the skills of the 55th overall draft pick patiently.
In his first five summer games, James has averaged 5.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 25.4 minutes, shooting 28.6% from the field and 10% on 3-pointers.
“He must excel as a shooter,” noted an NBA scout through McMenamin. “But he does play the game with the right approach.”
The Lakers have recorded a single victory in the summer league matchups. Notably, top pick Zaccharie Risacher from the Hawks did not feature against LA.
