Steph Curry, the star of the Golden State Warriors, expressed his feelings about his teammate Klay Thompson departing for the Dallas Mavericks, admitting that it’s tough to see him go but acknowledging the business side of basketball.
Curry shared his desire to end his career with the Warriors and expressed a wish that Thompson could have done the same.
Speaking to reporters during Team USA practice in Las Vegas, Curry mentioned, “We would’ve loved to maintain the core and finish out together. So, you have to be able to celebrate what we accomplished and be able to move on.”
When asked about Thompson’s departure, Curry simply stated, “It sucks,” and acknowledged that it’s a reality he never envisioned, but ultimately wants Thompson to be happy.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who also coaches Team USA, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the bond and success the team has shared over the years and recognizing that Thompson’s departure feels unusual for everyone involved. Kerr highlighted the importance of allowing players the freedom to follow their hearts and make choices that are best for them.
Thompson’s impressive stats during the 2023-24 season for the Warriors included averaging 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and stellar shooting percentages from the field, three-point range, and the free-throw line.
Selected as the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Warriors, Thompson had a successful career with the team, earning multiple All-Star selections, All-NBA honors, and contributing to four championship victories.
