Deion Sanders is not the only one losing players.
After three seasons with the program, Michigan football receiver and return specialist A.J. Henning has entered the transfer portal.
The former four-star recruit who joined Michigan as part of the 2020 class was the second-ranked member of that class, behind Andrew Gentry.
Henning made 25 catches for 198 yards during his Michigan career. He also rushed for 186 yards and two scores on 15 carries.
The program will miss him mostly on special teams, where he made a name for himself as both a kick and punt returner. Henning averaged 8.2 yards per punt return over the past two seasons and scored two special teams touchdowns during his career.
In his final two seasons with the program, Henning helped the team go 25-3, win two Big Ten championships, and appear twice in the College Football Playoff. He even scored a touchdown during Michigan’s first of back-to-back blowout wins over Ohio State in 2021.
Henning attended Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort, Illinois, where he played football and track and field. He had an outstanding football career, recording 140 receptions for 2,383 yards and 36 touchdowns, and rushing for 1,055 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was also a two-time Illinois state champion in the 100-meter dash and was named the Gatorade Illinois Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2019.
Henning is known for his speed and agility on the field, as well as his ability to make difficult catches in traffic. He is expected to have a prominent role in whatever college he chooses to continue his career.
He has already made an impact at the University of Michigan and is expected to continue to develop into one of the top wide receivers in college football.
