Recent reports from Action News 5 reveal that organizers of the Southern Heritage Classic are suing Deion Sanders and Jackson State University. This lawsuit stems from Sanders’ comments about the upcoming 2022 game between Jackson State and Tennessee State at Memphis’ Liberty Bowl.
The company managing the Southern Heritage Classic filed a suit against Jackson State and the Southwestern Athletic Conference after Jackson State expressed its desire to end its contract for the game, which still had two years remaining. The classic, which showcases Jackson State and Tennessee State, has been held at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis under a five-year agreement that will last until 2024.
While Jackson State initially agreed to play Tennessee State in the 2022 edition, the university later intended to back out of the last two scheduled matchups.
Sanders criticized the event’s financial setup in a recent appearance on the “Pardon My Take” podcast, calling it a “hustle.” He highlighted financial losses due to high expenses like band and player transportation, accommodations, and meals, questioning the need for a promoter for a college event. Sanders stressed the importance of addressing the business aspect in HBCUs and emphasized changes being made in that regard.

Jackson State had officially notified SMC on Feb. 1 of its intention to withdraw from the rivalry event that has historically generated significant revenue by pitting Jackson State against Tennessee State. The university attributed its decision to the SWAC and its conflicting events. The termination notice was signed by Edward O. Watson, identified as the General Counsel for JSU.
Sanders has recently made headlines for sharing details about having two toes amputated due to foot surgery complications. Additionally, he disclosed having interviewed for multiple Power Five head-coaching positions earlier this year.
The annual classic between Jackson State and Tennessee State has seen 28 matchups, with Tennessee State leading the series with 17 wins to Jackson State’s 11.
