Dak Prescott has expressed regret for appearing to justify the actions of fans during the playoffs on Sunday evening. Following the Dallas Cowboys’ 23-17 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers, some Cowboys supporters threw objects like water bottles at the referees on the field.

Initially, when asked about the incident, Prescott commented that it was “unfortunate” the fans had behaved in that manner. When informed by a reporter that the referees were specifically targeted by the thrown items, Prescott responded: “Well, then they deserve it.” After being questioned about the situation by another reporter, he added, “I suppose that’s why the referees left so quickly. I think everyone was frustrated with how things unfolded.”

Following criticism of his remarks on social media, Prescott took to Twitter to issue an apology. He wrote, “I deeply apologize for my post-game comments about the referees on Sunday. I allowed my emotions to get the best of me after a disappointing loss, and my statements were unjust and inappropriate.

“I have the utmost respect for the NFL Officials and have always appreciated their professionalism and the challenges they face in their roles. The safety of all individuals attending or participating in sporting events is of paramount importance.”

“I made a mistake, and for that, I am truly sorry.”

Prescott scored the final touchdown for the Cowboys in the game and also threw a touchdown pass in the second quarter.
