Luke Prokop, a 19-year-old defenseman for the Nashville Predators, has made history by becoming the first NHL player to openly come out as gay. In a social media post on Monday, Prokop shared the news with the world.

“In the midst of the past year and a half, I’ve had an opportunity to discover my true self,” expressed Prokop. “I no longer feel the need to hide who I am. Today, I am happy to announce to everyone that I am gay…

“I believe that by living authentically, I can bring my whole self to the ice and increase my chances of achieving my aspirations. I am thankful for my incredible family, friends, and agents who have supported and loved me throughout this journey, knowing this side of me.”

He went on to say, “My hope is that by sharing my truth, I can show others that gay individuals are embraced in the hockey community, as we strive to ensure that hockey is truly inclusive for everyone.”

Despite signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Predators in December 2020 following his third-round selection in last year’s draft, Prokop has yet to play his debut game with the team.
