Serena Williams was defeated in the second round of the Emilia-Romagna Open by Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic. The match was decided after a closely contested first set, with Siniakova dominating the second set to claim victory with a score of 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Williams had joined the Parma tournament to get more exposure to playing on clay courts leading up to the French Open, which is set to commence on 30 May this year. She received a wild card entry into the Emilia-Romagna Open after being knocked out in the first round of the Italian Open the previous week by Nadia Podoroska.
In this tournament, Williams managed to progress a bit further by defeating 17-year-old Lisa Pigato from Italy in her initial match. However, her journey was cut short in the subsequent round by a determined performance from Siniakova. Despite a strong start by Williams, who reached a 5-4 set point in the first set, Siniakova rallied back by winning four consecutive games, eventually clinching the set with a more consistent tie-breaker performance.
Following the match, the 68th seed in women’s singles, Siniakova, commented, “I feel amazing. It was a fantastic match. I played so well. I’m so happy that I could finish it like this. It was really a pleasure to share the court with her.”
Venus Williams, who also received a wild card entry into the Parma tournament, has also been eliminated.
