On Sunday, Djokovic’s dream of achieving the first calendar grand slam in men’s tennis since 1969 and surpassing his rivals Federer and Nadal with a 21st major title in a single tournament faded as he was defeated in the US Open final by world no. 2 Daniil Medvedev.

After securing a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over the 34-year-old Serbian, Medvedev collapsed to the ground, later explaining that it was a tribute to the Fifa video game series. This win marked Medvedev’s first major title and a triumph over the player he considers the greatest in the history of tennis.

Expressing empathy for Djokovic, Medvedev mentioned, “I do feel sorry for Novak because I cannot imagine what he feels.” Reflecting on his victory, he added, “This win boosts my confidence and sets a positive tone for my future. Defeating someone with a 27-0 record in grand slams throughout the year and halting such a significant pursuit gives me a sense of accomplishment.”

Following the match, Djokovic revealed his feelings to reporters. “Relief,” he admitted, “I was glad it was over.”

Now, at 25, Medvedev plans to revel in his triumph. “Russians know how to celebrate,” he remarked, adding, “Hopefully I will not make headlines for my celebrations.”
