Just before the 2021 French Open began, tennis star Naomi Osaka surprised fans by announcing that she would not be participating in any of her required media obligations.

The current world no. 2 in women’s tennis explained that the impact on her mental health from answering questions during press conferences was the main reason behind her decision.

In a statement shared on social media, Osaka expressed: “I want to let you know that I will not be doing any press during Roland Garros. I have often felt that athletes’ mental health is not respected, especially evident during press conferences. We sit there and face questions that are repetitive or that plant seeds of doubt in our minds, and I do not want to subject myself to people who question me.”

The French Tennis Federation (FFT) is considering how to address Osaka’s decision to disregard the mandatory rule. Osaka herself mentioned in her statement that she anticipates facing a substantial fine.

“I trust that the significant fine I receive will be donated to a mental health charity,” she remarked. “My choice not to participate in press conferences is not a personal act against the tournament.”
