This incident could easily make its way to the list of the most absurd sports injuries ever.
On Sunday, Oakland Athletics’ starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo was put on the injured list due to a fracture in his left hand. This fracture in his pitching hand, specifically his pinkie finger, happened when he accidentally hit a table while playing a video game before his scheduled start on Saturday.
After a 8-4 defeat by the Baltimore Orioles, an X-ray revealed a hairline fracture which led to his immediate placement on the 10-day injured list. According to Oakland Manager Melvin, Luzardo bumped his hand on the desk while engrossed in the game just before pitching. Despite some soreness, he went through warm-ups and was cleared by the training staff to pitch. However, post-game X-ray showed the hairline fracture.
Luzardo pitched for three innings against the Orioles and endured the loss, conceding six runs, out of which three were earned, from five hits. This season, he holds a 1-3 record with a 5.79 ERA over six starts.
The A’s were leading the AL West with a 16-12 record before the incident occurred.
