The Washington NFL team has been deliberating for some time on selecting a new name for their future. Recently, the team made a decision and officially retired the Redskins nickname on Monday.
The team has refrained from disclosing its new name due to pending trademark issues. However, they completed a “thorough review” of the name, with the intention of eliminating any uncertainty about the future of the name, according to a report by Ben Fischer in the Sports Business Journal.
Major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target, as well as Nike and Dick’s Sporting Goods, removed Redskins merchandise from their websites in the previous week.
The controversy surrounding the ‘Redskins’ name has been a topic of debate for many years. The name has been criticized widely for being considered a racial slur against Native Americans. FedEx was the first to call for the name change in early July.
In response to the request, the team released a statement announcing they would conduct a comprehensive review of the team’s name.
The retirement of the name also opens up opportunities for the team to construct a new stadium and relocate back within the city limits of Washington, D.C.
