On Monday, the University of Kentucky took a drastic step by dismissing its entire cheerleading coaching staff following an inquiry that uncovered inappropriate behavior by multiple individuals. Matt Jones from Kentucky Sports Radio broke the news that all four coaches of the university’s cheerleading team have been let go.
Kentucky issued a statement stating that the cheerleading coaches had failed to provide adequate supervision during off-campus events, where members of the cheerleading squad engaged in inappropriate behavior such as hazing, alcohol consumption, and public nudity.
A couple of cheerleaders took to Twitter to defend the program.
“This program epitomizes professionalism. It has not only enhanced my athletic skills but also my character,” wrote Riley Aguiar on Twitter. “This greatly impacts me and my teammates who have dedicated our lives to this university and team. Please don’t believe the falsehoods that are harming us.”
Allie Law also shared her thoughts on the allegations, stating, “This program has consistently been exceptional and has produced outstanding individuals due to the mentorship provided by our coaches. I hope people don’t succumb to the lies that have been taken too far.”
UK Provost David W. Blackwell stated that the review revealed:
- Coaches were aware of or should have been aware of inappropriate behavior by cheerleaders but did not take adequate measures to address it;
- During a team retreat at Lake Cumberland, some cheerleaders engaged in gymnastics routines that included throwing their teammates from a dock into the water while partly unclothed. These routines, known as “basket tosses,” were performed under the instruction of other squad members and in the presence of at least some coaches;
- Coaches permitted cheerleading alumni to bring boats and alcohol to the retreat, where some cheerleaders were partially undressed and/or consuming alcohol while on boats;
- Coaches did not intervene to stop squad members from drinking alcohol brought to the retreat by some individuals. Several squad members became extremely intoxicated and required medical attention; and
- During a cheerleading camp in Tennessee, some cheerleaders were instructed by other squad members to chant inappropriate phrases and wear attire without underwear.
However, there was no evidence of sexual misconduct or assault during these incidents.
