San Jose State Player In Critical Condition After Severe Brain Injury In Auto Crash

Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Kyane Schmidt is currently hospitalized after sustaining a severe brain injury.

Schmidt was in a solo car rollover incident on Wednesday, which led to him being in an unconscious state.

“For those of you that don’t know, Kyane was in a solo car rollover crash on 101 South in Goleta CA, near Santa Barbara,” stated the Caring Bridge site established by Schmidt’s family. “He was thrown from the vehicle and sustained a severe brain injury. He was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in a deep unconscious state. The doctor anticipates he will be unconscious for several weeks. He’s facing a tough battle… We have faith in him.”

The San Jose State football Twitter account released the following statement:

“Our brother Kyane needs our support as he fights! Please click on the link below to send a message to him and his family with your prayers and well wishes for support, strength, recovery, and love,” as per the SJSU football tweet.

Schmidt joined the team as a walk-on before the last season as an offensive lineman but was switching to the defensive position during spring training.

He did not participate in any games during the 2019 season.
