Demetrious Johnson is leaving behind the flyweight division of the UFC and looking towards new opportunities. The recent happenings in the 125-pound category have been unprecedented during Johnson’s six-year reign as a champion, culminating in Henry Cejudo’s successful title defense against TJ Dillashaw at the UFC on ESPN event.

Recently, Johnson was absent from the UFC scene as he was involved in promotional activities for One Championship in Asia. During his time in Japan for the One Championship promotional event, he expressed his contentment with moving on from his previous division. “It was never my division, it’s the UFC’s division,” Johnson stated to ESPN. “I’ve moved on to bigger and better things, in my opinion. I am genuinely happy for Henry Cejudo, TJ Dillashaw, and the flyweight division.”

Johnson is set to make his debut at One Championship against Yuya Wakamatsu (10-3) on March 31st in Tokyo at an event aptly named ‘A New Era’. The card will also feature former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. Johnson emphasized his focus on competition rather than creating controversy, highlighting the different approach at One Championship compared to the UFC.

Reflecting on his time in the UFC, Johnson shared insights on the contrast in priorities. “I always felt like in the UFC, your star power is based on how many pay-per-views you sell,” Johnson explained. “But you never have to worry about that here. It’s a different vibe. When you’re not worried about selling a pay-per-view and just competing – and everyone is happy with it – that’s what it’s all about.”
