British player Kyle Edmund, the number three seed, faced a tough loss in the Brisbane International as he was defeated by Japanese qualifier Yasutaka Uchiyama in the second round.On the other hand, the number six seed Grigor Dimitrov continued his strong performance in Brisbane by defeating Australia’s John Millman and securing a spot in the quarterfinals where he will face Japan’s Kei Nishikori.
Former U.S. Open finalist Kei Nishikori, the number two seed, had a convincing victory over Denis Kudla with a score of 7-5, 6-2 in just 80 minutes. Unfortunately for world No. 14 Edmund, he was unable to secure a win and was defeated by Uchiyama with a score of 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
Yasutaka Uchiyama, ranked 180th in the world, will face the winner of the match between eighth-seeded Australian Nick Kyrgios and France’s Jeremy Chardy in the quarterfinals.Meanwhile, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, the 2017 Brisbane champion, was the first player to reach the quarterfinals after a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the 38th-ranked player Millman.
Dimitrov’s Brisbane record now stands at 18-5. Despite Millman’s strong fight, including a memorable win over Roger Federer in the 2018 U.S. Open fourth round, Dimitrov was able to secure the win. Millman praised Dimitrov’s performance, saying, “I thought he played great tennis. Stingy with his errors, very aggressive — he had a day.”
