The clash between defending national champion Nebraska and Illinois at the NCAA volleyball semi-finals in Minneapolis carries significant weight. John Cook, leading the Cornhuskers (28-6) to their fourth consecutive final four appearance, aims to secure their third championship in four years and sixth overall. On the other side, Chris Tamas has guided the Illini (32-3) to the semi-finals in only his second year as head coach after previously assisting Cook during the 2015-16 seasons.

“I’ve admired and learned so much from him during our time together,” Tamas mentioned on Wednesday. “But now, it’s time to compete against him and come out victorious.”

In the second semi-final, top-seeded Stanford (32-1) faces off against No. 4 BYU (31-1) at the Target Center. The winners will advance to the championship match on Saturday night. Nebraska, seeded at No. 7, and No. 3 Illinois have split their two encounters in Big Ten play. Since their loss to Illinois on Oct. 27, the Huskers have won 12 matches in a row. Meanwhile, Illinois rebounded from three losses in a four-game stretch to secure 17 consecutive wins after a stunning victory over Big Ten champion Minnesota on Oct. 12.

Tamas previously served as Cook’s defensive assistant and middle blockers coach until Illinois’ athletic director, Josh Whitman, pursued him for an interview in February 2017. The hiring process unfolded swiftly, with Tamas transitioning to the head coaching role within 48 hours. “I wanted to keep him for a bit longer,” Cook acknowledged, “but I understand the opportunities like the one at Illinois don’t come around often. If he had a chance, he had to pursue it.”
