One of the sports recently reinstated by Eastern Michigan University this spring is women’s tennis. This decision comes after the university had initially eliminated several sports, including women’s tennis, in March. The university announced on November 27th that they have hired a coach for the women’s tennis team and are preparing to revive the sport in the upcoming spring of 2019.

Geoff Larcom, the university’s spokesperson, mentioned that they will soon reveal the name of the coach in a separate announcement later this week. Women’s tennis was among the sports cut by Eastern Michigan University due to budget constraints earlier this year.

Following the elimination of two women’s sports teams by Eastern Michigan University, students reportedly filed a lawsuit. A federal judge granted a preliminary injunction on September 27th, temporarily stopping the removal of the university’s two women’s sports teams.

U.S. District Court Judge George Caram Steeh ruled that Eastern Michigan University had clearly violated Title IX, which mandates the university to devise a plan to reinstate the women’s softball and tennis teams.

In a statement, Eastern Michigan University expressed its commitment to creating more opportunities for female athletes in their athletic programs. The university stated that they are collaborating with the plaintiffs and the court to find a sustainable solution that adheres to federal regulations and provides a conducive environment for their students.
