NFL Set to Revise Helmet-Contact Rule Soon

NFL to update helmet-contact rule very soon

During a recent preseason game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings, multiple injuries were sustained, making it a challenging affair for both teams.

In the midst of the confusion, the NFL has announced plans for ongoing discussions regarding the new helmet-contact rule. These discussions will focus on the rule’s implementation in preseason games, as reported by ESPN. The league is set to distribute an updated video tutorial to game officials, players, and coaches.

The new helmet rule was a key topic during the previously scheduled conference call on Wednesday, aiming to further clarify its application among league officials. Pro Football Talks was the first to report on this conference call. AI Riveron, the league’s vice president of officials, and other league executives will collaborate on creating a revised instructional video.

This video will showcase both correct and incorrect interpretations of the rule by game officials, aiming to reduce confusion and ensure consistent enforcement. This marks the beginning of the rule being enforced in games.

The expanded helmet rule introduced in May prohibits players from leading with their helmets during contact. Sources indicate that the NFL is considering a three-year adjustment period to emphasize behavioral changes and ensure consistent enforcement.

Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL’s medical director and a neurosurgeon, emphasized the need to convey a consistent message to officials, players, and coaches that helmets are for protection, not weapons.
