The New England Patriots have decided to release wide receiver Jordan Matthews following a hamstring injury he sustained during the fourth practice of training camp. Initially placed on the injured reserve list, the Patriots have now reached an injury settlement with Matthews, allowing him the opportunity to return later in the season if he fully recovers.

Matthews had signed a one-year deal with the Patriots worth $1 million in April, with $300,000 guaranteed. He was competing for a spot on the roster alongside Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan. With Edelman facing a suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, Matthews was seen as a strong contender for a place on the team.
However, his injury disrupted these plans, leading the Patriots to explore other options like bringing in veteran free agent Eric Decker for a workout.
Currently, Edelman and Hogan are at the top of the Patriots’ wide receiver depth chart, with Cordarrelle Patterson also in contention, possibly serving as a kickoff returner. The performance of Patterson and four-year veteran Phillip Dorsett will determine their roles on the team.
Additionally, the Patriots may consider veteran Kenny Britt for a role, but he is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained early in camp. The absence of Malcolm Mitchell due to a knee injury adds to the challenges for the team.
