On Thursday afternoon, Kirk Cousins has become the highest paid player in the NFL history after signing a three-year $84 million deal with Minnesota. And now, the Vikings have a chance to secure that elusive first ever Super Bowl victory with Cousins joining the franchise as the latest quarterback.
With this latest contract, Cousins average annual earning is $28 million which is, for now, the highest figure in the league, at least till the time another mega quarterback star signs a contract like this.
Mark Wilf and Zygi Wilf, the team’s owners were willing to invest such a huge amount, hopeful that Cousins may turn out to be a keystone to a championship squad.
Cousins said, “If anybody in this city or this state has a question about their commitment, I think this contract shows that they’re all in. It is a tremendous amount of belief in me as a person, and I’m humbled and honored to get the OK on that.”
There have been many complex factors which have kept the NFL players from receiving guaranteed and sure contracts, but with this deal, Cousins was able to cash in a historic deal while he also received long-term security and stability via the contract which he had never felt in Washington.
Cousins will be representing the fourth primary quarterback for the Vikings. Cousins will also be representing the eight starting quarterback for a season opener if he continues to stay in good health throughout summer. Sam Bradford, Case Keenum, and Teddy Bridgewater are the other free agents this week which signed contracts with other teams, leaving Vikings with no other backup plan if Cousins refused to take their offer.
Notably, Cousins began his career with Washington with 57 games in six seasons, which drafted him in the fourth round in the year 2012, placing him behind Robert Griffin III, who was the second overall pick.
