Josh McDaniels, former head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, may return to one of his former teams under a specific condition, as per a recent report.

McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler were both relieved of their duties midseason after the team started with a disappointing 3-5 record. McDaniels’ tenure in Sin City concluded with a disappointing 9-16 record, a significant letdown considering he took over a 10-win playoff team.

According to a report by Jeff Howe of The Athletic, McDaniels could potentially make a comeback to the New England Patriots, but under the condition that Bill Belichick remains as head coach:

“Belichick will need to outline a concrete plan to significantly enhance the on-field performance after the Patriots’ worst record (4-13) under Kraft’s ownership. As part of this plan, the potential return of former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is being considered, according to sources familiar with the situation.”

“McDaniels, who has collaborated with Belichick for a cumulative period of 19 seasons, was dismissed as head coach of the Raiders in October. He has maintained a close relationship with Belichick, and has long been a favored figure within the organization,”

The Patriots had a disappointing 4-13 season, marking it as the franchise’s worst performance since the 1992 season, when the team finished 2-14. 2023 also marks the third losing season for New England in four years, and the fifth consecutive campaign without a playoff victory.

Many anticipate owner Robert Kraft to part ways with Belichick following a dismal year, though it is uncertain what his final decision will be. If Belichick remains, it would seem logical to bring back McDaniels.

Although McDaniels struggled as a head coach (with an 11-17 record during his tenure with the Denver Broncos from 2009 to 2010), the Patriots’ offense consistently performed at a high level during his time as offensive coordinator.

It’s worth noting that quarterback Mac Jones excelled under McDaniels in 2021, but faced challenges after McDaniels departed for Vegas.
