ESPN’s renowned NBA play-by-play announcer, Mike Breen, is not only famous for his iconic “Bang!” call but now he can celebrate being “bang on the money” with his new contract extension.
According to a report by Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, ESPN has granted Breen a two-year contract extension, keeping him under their wing for a total of four years:
“Breen, 62, has agreed to a two-year, multi-million-dollar extension with ESPN to go along with the final two seasons that he has left on his current deal with the network, according to sources.”
This news brings joy to Breen’s vast fanbase. In 2023, ESPN has enforced numerous layoffs to cut costs, resulting in the departure of several notable talents such as Mark Jackson, Jeff Van Gundy, Suzy Kolber, Jalen Rose, Steve Young, Matt Hasselbeck, Keyshawn Johnson, and Max Kellerman.
Breen has been the voice of the NBA Finals every year since 2006, taking over from Al Michaels who moved to NBC Sports for a remarkable 16-year tenure as the voice of “Sunday Night Football.” Breen is also the play-by-play announcer for the New York Knicks on MSG Network, and he has provided commentary for five different Olympic Games.
Longtime ESPN commentator Doris Burke and former NBA head coach Doc Rivers have stepped in to replace Van Gundy and Jackson on the network’s top commentary team alongside Breen.
