The family of Phillip Adams, a former NFL player who killed six people before taking his own life in 2021, has filed a lawsuit against South Carolina State University (SCSU). The family alleges that Adams suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and that the university did not treat his head injuries properly.

After his death, doctors found that Adams had stage two CTE, commonly caused by repeated head trauma, a common occurrence for football players.

The lawsuit alleges that Adams sustained head injuries while playing college football for SCSU from 2006 to 2009. The family claims that the university failed to treat his injuries properly or to educate him about the potential long-term health impact.

Adams committed murder-suicide in Rock Hill, South Carolina, killing six people, including a physician, his wife, their grandchildren, and two HVAC technicians working at the Lesslie home.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and Adams is survived by a son who has suffered significant emotional trauma following his death.
