A tragic incident unfolded at the Toluca Stadium in San Salvador, resulting in the death of 63-year-old soccer referee Jose Arnoldo Amaya. Amaya, with two decades of refereeing experience, was officiating an amateur match when a player was shown two yellow cards and subsequently expelled, leading to a confrontation that turned violent.
The player, along with teammates and supporters, physically assaulted Amaya, causing severe internal injuries that ultimately claimed his life after he was rushed to Zacamil Hospital.
The Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT) issued a statement denouncing the violence in sports venues across the country in response to the tragic death of referee Jose Arnoldo Amaya.
President Hugo Carillo also expressed condemnation for the attackers, stating, “We condemn the incident involving referee Jose Arnoldo Amaya and hope that the authorities can identify and hold accountable those responsible for this heinous act.”
The incident sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice as the soccer community mourned the loss of a dedicated referee.
