Associate head coach Chuck Love’s suspension with pay, along with the removal of starting guard Ashley Scoggin from the team roster, has been widely discussed since the news broke on Saturday night.
Nebraska women’s basketball head coach Amy Williams has now addressed the incident publicly. However, Williams has not confirmed whether the decisions surrounding Love and Scoggin are linked.
Reflecting on the recent events, Williams shared, “It’s been a challenging few days, but for our team to really come together, stay united, compete, and secure a hard-fought win today, I couldn’t be more proud.”
Regarding the connection between the suspension and player removal, Williams said, “We received two separate news releases yesterday. Are those two things connected?”
“That’s something that I can’t answer at this time, but it’s something that we are focused on with our current team,” Williams stated.
“Our team has leaned on each other, and I’m very proud of how they’ve supported each other and tackled difficulties together. We always emphasize embracing challenges and overcoming them,” she added.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln declined to comment on Love’s suspension, citing it as a personnel matter.
Williams refrained from disclosing who made the decision to remove Scoggin from the team.
When asked about the decision-maker, Williams responded, “That’s a question I am not going to answer right now. Multiple individuals were involved, and we will leave it at that.”
Sam Haiby, a junior guard for the Huskers, shared his perspective on the situation:
Haiby remarked, “Coach always says her favorite song is ‘Can You Stand the Rain,’ and this is definitely a storm for us. It is crucial for us to stand together. We’ve had team discussions, and it’s vital for us to remain united.”
Looking ahead, Williams expressed confidence that no other players will be leaving the team. She stated, “We will move forward with the current roster we have.”
Regarding Scoggin, a 23-year-old redshirt sophomore, there is speculation about her potential transfer to another school for basketball opportunities.
As for Love, a husband and father, his pay suspension leaves uncertainty about his return to the coaching staff this season, possibly due to personal matters requiring his attention.
