A heartbreaking incident has struck a former Georgia football player this week as his 10-year-old son, Walker Phillips, tragically lost his life in a house fire in Cartersville while his parents were away on a ski trip.
Phillips’ three children were at their grandparent’s house when the fire broke out, with the other two kids thankfully escaping unharmed, according to authorities. The community has offered an outpouring of support for the grieving family during this difficult time.
Courtney Phillips, Cory’s wife, who is also a former gymnast at Georgia, is mourning the loss of their son alongside her husband.
Walker’s 4th-grade teacher, Mrs. Julia Bare, shared her thoughts on the devastating event, highlighting Walker’s leadership qualities and his inclusive nature towards his peers: “Walker is a leader in our classroom, especially among the boys. He’s just a great role model. A phenomenal athlete, he always makes sure that everyone is included during recess and P.E., regardless of their own abilities. He was always looking out for the underdog.”
Cory Phillips, who played at Georgia from 1998 to 2002 and was the last former walk-on at Georgia to start at quarterback before Stetson Bennett, concluded his career with 1,378 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions during his time in Athens. The football community and fans are extending their condolences and support to the Phillips family during this tragic time.
