New York City FC seemed poised to claim the MLS Cup title during regular time in Portland. With Valentin Castellanos scoring the only goal of the game until the final moments, the team, led by the league’s top scorer in the regular season, appeared set to secure victory.

However, Portland’s Timbers put up a strong fight, refusing to concede defeat in front of their home crowd. In the 94th minute, they staged a dramatic comeback to equalize and force extra time, as Felipe Mora scored in the chaotic closing moments. The additional time saw no further goals, resulting in a penalty shootout. New York City FC managed to lead once more during the shootout and ultimately won 4-2, with Alex Callens securing the title with a decisive goal. This triumph marked NYCFC’s first MLS Cup win, denying the home team the opportunity to celebrate a championship with their fans.
